About the course

Preventing sexual harassment is a shared responsibility.

Employees need to understand what sexual harassment can look like, including conduct that may have been dismissed previously as humour, workplace banter or harmless attention. They also need to know how to respond if they experience or witness inappropriate behaviour and how concerns can be raised safely.

This practical and interactive session helps employees understand the boundaries of acceptable workplace behaviour without creating unnecessary fear or preventing ordinary workplace conversations.

It considers conduct occurring:

  • In the physical workplac
  • During work-related social events
  • On customer or client premises
  • During business travel and overnight stays
  • Through emails, messages, social media and online meetings
  • Between colleagues or involving customers, clients, contractors and other third parties

The session will cover

  • What sexual harassment means under the Equality Act 2010
  • How sexual harassment differs from harassment related to sex
  • The importance of the effect of conduct, not simply the intention behind it
  • How a single incident can amount to sexual harassment
  • Workplace banter, jokes and “grey areas”
  • Verbal, physical, visual and online harassment
  • Power imbalances and why some individuals may find it difficult to speak up
  • Challenging inappropriate behaviour safely and constructively
  • The role of witnesses and active bystanders
  • How and where to report concerns
  • What to expect after raising a concern
  • Victimisation and whistleblowing protections
  • Individual responsibility for contributing to a respectful workplace

Learning outcomes

By the end of the session, delegates will be able to:

  • Recognise different forms of sexual harassment
  • Understand how behaviour may affect another person, even where offence was not intended
  • Identify when workplace banter may have crossed a line
  • Respond appropriately if they experience or witness inappropriate conduct
  • Understand the available reporting routes and protections
  • Contribute positively to a safe, professional and inclusive workplace culture
