A year has now passed since employers were given a legal duty to actively prevent sexual harassment at work. Since then, we’ve seen a sharp rise in enquiries, ranging from compliance checks to complex cases involving third parties and staff complaints. These changes affect businesses of every size.

Further reforms are on the horizon. The proposed Employment Rights Bill would raise the bar by requiring employers to take “all reasonable steps” to prevent harassment, and by reinstating liability for harassment by third parties across all protected characteristics. This will be particularly challenging for sectors such as retail, leisure, and hospitality.

Employers must act now. Many employees still lack a clear understanding of what constitutes sexual harassment, especially in diverse, multi-generational workplaces. It remains underreported, yet is a major cause of toxic workplace cultures.

Sexual harassment is any unwelcome sexual behaviour, verbal, physical, in person or online, that makes someone feel humiliated, intimidated or uncomfortable. It can involve colleagues, managers, clients, or customers. Examples include unwanted advances, intrusive questions, explicit jokes or messages, sharing pornographic material, or inappropriate touching.

Prevention is always better than cure. Our Sexual Harassment training goes beyond box-ticking, offering practical, interactive content that builds real understanding and shared responsibility for a culture of respect.
