In 2012 our village pub was threatened with closure. Our small village in the beautiful peak district looked set to lose its last remaining village pub.
Just a matter of months later the Post Office was in danger of closing so along with a group of fellow villagers and supported by organizations including the Plunkett Foundation we set out to buy the pub and secure premises for the transfer of the Post Office. It was a long slog with near heartbreak along the way, but our persistence and the determination of the whole village helped us raise the money to buy the pub as a community and pick up the keys in November 2013!
There are currently over 320 members of the Bamford Community Society.
Since then I have been on the board of Directors dealing with HR issues. Everything from our staffing structures and recruitment and reward to dealing with workplace problems including conflict, performance and conduct issues.
I have learned a lot in the last 3 years about working with community groups, running small businesses with staff and volunteers and have been pleased to be able to transfer my previous experience of HR in the public sector into small business.
I am grateful to have had the chance to work with some great people at the Anglers Rest , Bamford and the Bamford Community Society. So many truly inspirational and very committed people I feel it has enriched me both personally and professionally.
Earlier this year our village hosted the first community pub conference. 17 of the 35 community run pubs came and we spent the day sharing ideas, knowledge and experiences. The event was supported and funded by the Plunkett foundation.
When the opportunity came to apply for a specialist adviser role I jumped at the chance to help and support other community organizations. I can’t wait to get started.
So what do Plunkett do?
They provide a one-stop shop of support for predominantly rural communities looking to set up and run a range of community-owned co-operatives. The support includes a full-time team based at their main office who respond to enquiries by phone and email. They also have a network of advisers, mentors and specialists based across the UK ready to help. In addition, they produce a range of tools, resources and information available online to help communities through every step of the process.
Plunkett is the only national organisation supporting the development of community-owned village shops in the UK. Through a dedicated team, specialist support programmes and online, phone and face to face support, Plunkett is able to support communities to open new community-owned shops and to help existing community-owned shops to thrive.
They promote and support the development of a range of other community enterprise types using the community co-operative model, from farms and woodlands to bookshops and pubs.
Plunkett also undertakes a range of consultancy work for public, private and civil society organisations.
