Many of our Watertight HR & Legal clients reach a ‘magic number’ of employees when they realise they need to make sure they are building a HR infrastructure to support their growth plans. This number is not the same for every organisation, sometimes it’s 10, sometimes it’s 50 and we even support clients who have reached over 100 employees before they need external support. At each stage, there are different issues and priorities to work through.
Here’s an example of how we help you build your HR function from the ground up. We’ll always split our plan into bitesize chunks, leaving you to focus on the business:
1. Legal compliance
We audit your organisation and give you the correct documents to make sure that you are legally compliant in all areas of employment law, health and safety and data protection. We know this looks different for every business so will work with you to make sure there is focus on managing the risks specific to your business.
2. Record keeping
We provide you with a simple HR software to put all of your employee details onto: documentation, holidays, sickness and performance management. Having all of this in one place means there are no spreadsheets or unnecessary paperwork.
3. Documentation
This overlaps with legal compliance, but having the right documentation is absolutely fundamental: contracts of employment, policies, records of performance management and training. Many business owners focus on the day-to-day and just do not have time to worry about what’s written down and we’ve been told time and time again how useful it is to hand over the boring stuff to someone else! Thankfully, we enjoy the boring stuff.
We don’t operate with a one size fits all approach to documentation. Some leaders prefer prescriptive documentation and are high-compliance, they like everything to be written down so that they can refer to it to guide them. Others not so much, and we help them make sure the right documents are there but that they only contain what is absolutely necessary.
4. Process
This is ongoing and something we work with you to achieve over time. Often, the first exposure to the employment process for leaders is when an issue arises i.e. misconduct. We are seeing more and more that leaders want to pre-empt issues and feel prepared to deal with them and we spend a lot of time putting the right foundations in place to equip managers. A lot of this is in day-to-day activities and work on building the right culture.
5. Leadership and culture
Culture is something that starts being developed from the first time somebody is employed. In start-ups, the culture is developed on problem-solving, creativity and a flat hierarchy. As the organisation grows this starts to grow holes.
We help businesses move to a growth culture more focused on core values and mission rather than a culture being driven by the personalities of those who started the business. It’s possible to keep the ‘one team’ feel and the agility that comes with that however leadership training is absolutely critical. We can help with developing your mission and values and the getting this embedded into your HR practice. We also provide management and leadership training when organisations need it most to ensure that the organisation has the leaders it needs to respond to external changes and keep the team moving forwards rather than being stuck in the past.
With our Watertight HR & Legal Premium package, we actually throw in a half-day management training session as part of the package and there isn’t a time frame by which this needs to be delivered, so we will work with you to determine when this should be delivered in line with your ongoing projects.
6. Internal HR
Some of our clients don’t reach the stage where they need someone on-site. We frequently go out to work with our clients on an interim basis and then when they are ready for someone full-time, Bhayani Recruitment will find you the right HR professional to take the reins with some of the support we have provided.
