With the abolition of tribunal fees, employment claims have risen significantly, and an understanding of employment law and HR processes is essential for all businesses, whatever size and industry sector.
This interactive and enjoyable course provides an introductory insight into the core elements of HR and employment law, looking at the HR lifecycle. It draws on real-life scenarios, best practice, employment case law decisions and provides an opportunity for you to share your experiences to stimulate learning.

Objectives:
- build knowledge of the role of HR professionals
- identify the ways in which HR professionals add value and prioritise their work and develop knowledge of UK employment law
- effectively draft and implement employment contracts and HR policies
- identify where risks of unlawful discrimination can occur and take appropriate mitigating steps and ensure fairness
- apply good practice recruitment and induction techniques
- recognise different types of under-performance and how and when to intervene
- critically evaluate performance management practices
- understand employee relations (including handling grievances, disciplinary and absence management issues)
- managing employee exits

If you are new to HR, or want to enhance your people management skills, then this course is ideal for you. It provides a thorough overview of HR. It’ll help boost your confidence in managing HR issues and encourage you to explore and exchange ideas with other participants to support each other’s learning.
Learning Outcomes
- outline the basic legal context underlying employee relations processes to encourage the effective development and application of company policy to promote good practice and avoid penalties
- outline key HR practices in accordance with best practice and employment law
- analyse and evaluate the merits of core employee relations issues to support effective decision making at an early stage
- describe the key stages of disciplinary, capability and grievance procedures to support consistent application in accordance with the ACAS code
- reflect on your own organisation’s approach to recruitment and selection, employee reward and employee development to inform improvements and refinements to practices currently in place
- identify any particular aspects of HR Management to further research/ improve their own knowledge and confidence in handling, in support of their continuous professional development.
Course Structure
The course can be delivered:
- over a 4-week period, consisting of 4 half days; or
- 2 full days.
This learning can be in person or virtual via Zoom.
It is estimated that you will be required to undertake 6 hours of self-directed learning throughout the duration of this course. The sessions are interactive, with peer-to-peer learning to allow you to think practically about how to apply what you have learnt.
The delivery of the course has been spaced out to help you retain and apply practices into your working environment.
You will receive a certificate of attendance upon completion of the course.
