Managers

Good management is crucial in any organisation for several reasons, and its impact on employees is significant. A good manager provides direction, support, recognition, and a conducive work environment that nurtures employees’ professional growth and well-being. When a worker has a good manager, this can influence their attitude, engagement, productivity levels, and almost every other positive aspect of their approach to work.

A recent survey by Inpulse of 50,000 employees has shown that 81% of workers who felt trusted by their manager were engaged, compared to just 28% who didn’t. Whilst a vast difference, this is hardly surprising – considering it was also recently found that managers have as much of an impact on an employee’s mental health as their spouse or partner (69%).

But what could this mean for employers?

Whilst it is suggested by various experts that we are nearing the end of the ‘Great Resignation’; a term coined to discuss the unusually high rates of employee resignations which began during the pandemic, the majority of employees (86%) are found to be likely to quit their job if they feel it does not support their wellbeing.  This means it is more important than ever to support employee well-being, reduce stress, and create a positive culture.

A further result of the ‘Great Resignation’ is the skills shortage it has left behind, and the effects that this is having on remaining employees. Surveys and research indicate that working under ‘Rookie’, inexperienced managers are the cause of high stress levels among employees.

In times as uncertain as these, you must be confident in your managers’ ability to successfully lead and support your employees, as they are a defining factor of their experience at work.

What are the benefits of effective management?

Effective managers can be key in supporting change and bringing to life HR and L&D policies within the workforce, by bridging the gap between Human Resources and employees – it’s important to remember that it is likely managers who are passing communication down the business. Positive employee-manager relationships result in employees with higher levels of job satisfaction, commitment and loyalty to the business. With the right levels of support, line managers can be vital in challenging, motivating, and engaging employees.

What needs to be done?

Line managers in your organisation must have the right skills and support to in turn be able to support their team. Whilst training on how to act appropriately and legally within their role is important, ensuring managers possess emotional intelligence is vital, and leads to improved teamwork, self-awareness, working relationships, career longevity and social skills. Training managers on their soft skills such as effective communication, managing emotional responses and active listening and questioning is key to allowing people managers to perform at their best and in turn improving the job satisfaction of employees.
